An Australian mother is urging parents to rethink how they store and handle laundry detergent pods after a terrifying accident left her four-year-old daughter temporarily blind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The frightening incident happened on March 23 when little Luca de Groot was helping her mother, Jodi, with a simple household chore. It was something the child had done many times before, and at first, nothing seemed unusual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While loading the washing machine, Jodi handed Luca a colorful detergent capsule to hold for a moment. The small pod \u2014 soft, brightly colored, and slightly squishy \u2014 looked harmless enough. In Australia, the product is sold as Omo and in the United Kingdom under the Persil label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But within seconds, the situation turned into a medical emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Luca suddenly bit into the pod, causing it to burst. The concentrated detergent sprayed directly across her face and into her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe\u2019s never had the urge to bite them before,\u201d Jodi later explained. \u201cShe helps me with the laundry a lot, but she normally doesn\u2019t play with them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This time, however, the brightly colored capsule proved too tempting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBy the time I\u2019d turned around, she\u2019d already bitten it and it went into her eyes,\u201d Jodi recalled. \u201cThey\u2019re quite solid, so when they pop they spray.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The moment the detergent made contact, Luca began screaming in pain. Instinctively, she rubbed her eyes \u2014 something many children do when something irritates them \u2014 but that only spread the chemicals further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cKids being kids, she rubbed her eyes, which meant it went across both eyes,\u201d Jodi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Panicked, the mother rushed her daughter into the shower, hoping water would wash the detergent away and ease the pain. But the screaming continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI put her in the shower and looked at the back of the product,\u201d Jodi explained. \u201cIt said to \u2018seek medical advice,\u2019 so I didn\u2019t think it would cause such a big issue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When Luca remained hysterical and the pain didn\u2019t subside, Jodi called a poison hotline. The advice she received was immediate and urgent: take the child to the hospital right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Doctors quickly began flushing Luca\u2019s eyes with water in an attempt to remove the chemicals. Despite multiple rounds of irrigation, the damage had already been done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the next several days, Luca underwent three surgical procedures. One of them was an amniotic membrane transplant, a delicate treatment in which tissue from the placenta is placed over the surface of the eye to help damaged tissue heal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For 16 days, the young girl remained in the hospital under close medical supervision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere was a point where doctors thought she might need a fourth surgery because she wasn\u2019t opening her eyes,\u201d Jodi said. \u201cBut we managed to encourage her to open them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gradually, Luca\u2019s sight began returning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the injuries left lasting effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe has a slight vision impairment,\u201d her mother explained. \u201cIt could have been a lot worse. It\u2019s been incredibly traumatic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eventually, after more than two weeks in the hospital, Luca was allowed to go home. But the recovery is far from over. Her eyes remain red and irritated, and doctors say the healing process could take up to a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
